Jay Rodabush strikes High

Jay "Jim" Rodabush dropped this old 8 in his tracks on a late october morning. Jay was in the honey hole stand when this old warrior walked down the wrong trail. Jays deer had the biggest body of the season thus far. Thats probably the only reason his arrow connected. Nice work for a lefty.

First Time Luck for Will Hastings at Rawhide

14 yr old Will Hastings of Ocean City, Maryland arrowed this great buck on a trip with his father to Rawhide Camp. This buck was not taken with luck, Will is a state champion archer and made short work of this awesome 11 point, in a stand that his father has killed out of. Will is having a heck of a year, this is his third pope and young buck this season.Will Hasings didn't have to put in as many hours as dad, but Randy arrowed this great deer on the trip. Always fun to have the boys from the east coast in camp, and as always thanks for the lobster.

Sherwood Hadden and his lucky stand put another giant on the ground. Congratulations on this awesome triple-beam buck. Sherwood has killed 3 slammers out of his trusty swivel seat stand.

Congratulations Reid on a great buck, and a great hunt. Reid rattled and grunted this buck in on halloween morning. Using is old matthews and aluminum arrows this eleven point didn't make it 60 yards. Perfect shot for a fellow from Richmond.

Deer Season is right around the Corner!

Hopefully all of you out-of-state hunters drew your whitetail tags. If for some reason you didn't, get your leftover tag as soon as possible, the tags will run out. The deer are starting to really put on some antlers and it won't be long before we will be able to see what kind of giants we are going to have.

Get your bows out and do some practicing, your hunt will be coming up before you know it. Have a safe and fun summer.

Whitetail Deer Applications!

For all you non-resident deer hunters out there, this is a reminder to get on the internet and apply for your Fall 2011 whitetail deer tags. Your application has to be in by the end of April, this month. Don't count on getting a leftover tag, because they ran out last year before the fall. Good luck, and happy hunting.

Spring Turkey is Here!

This Shed season has brought over 130 sheds so far this spring with several good deer we knew and a few new deer we hope to see next year. We are still finding a few that carried their horns to the end of march.

April 1st brought us the opening of youth spring turkey season. On the morning of April 2nd it was a blistering 32 degrees, but this didn't keep the birds from gobbling. Tayiah and Ashton were lucky enough to have 2 longbeards come in and got this gobbler. A great start to Spring '11, it's gonna be a good one!

Season comes to an End!

We had another great year here at Rawhide, unfortunately, it had to end. Thank you to everyone for making it a lot of fun. We made many new friends this year and always enjoy having our buddies back every year. We left a lot of awesome deer out there and had a great crop of 3 year olds that many of you saw. Stay tuned, shed season is right around the corner. Talk to you all soon.

Ripken is home!

Just a quick note too all you guys. Heath and Melissa had their new baby boy, Ripken, last week. He is doing pretty good, but does have to have surgery on one of his lungs. He is scheduled to have surgery today and I thought you guys may want to shoot a prayer his way. Good luck Heath and Melissa.............Were all thinking of you and Ripken today!!! What's Going on at Rawhide!

Haven't spoken with some of you guys in a while so I need to tell you what we been up to. Deer season is upon us, and it appears to be another tremendous year here at Camp, with several new foodplots and a bunch of new treestands.

Most of the crops are being harvested around the area and the bucks are starting to spread out. We have been getting a lot of new bucks on camera the last couple of weeks.

The hunting this year also looks to be very rewarding, with a great crop of acorns and the HS fall-mix foodplots looking terrific, should help provide alot of awesome hunts.

See you all soon, and good luck with all your hunting this fall.

Also shoot your bows as much as possible prior to your hunts, it will determine your success. Remember when you practice, shoot them in the MIDDLE, stay away from the SHOULDER.

Rawhide Camp on the Outdoor Channel's HS Outdoors

If you weren't fortunate enough to catch Rawhide Camp on The Outdoor Channel last week, look for the hunt on the Primetime Bucks 14 Video out this Fall from Hunter's Specialties. Eddie Salter and his cameraman captured some great footage while hunting last Fall with Rawhide Camp, including lots of footage of a 180" 10 pointer commonly referred to as "Grandma's Buck". Eddie eventually scored on this great heavy framed 10 pointer pictured below that scored 154". Can't wait for the video to come out, and Congrats Eddie......

....not sure that anything will. It's hard to focus on Fall hunting plans while most of the country's been scorching in 100+ degree weather for a couple weeks, but here is a little reprieve from the Summer heat.

Heath and John have just begun setting Trail Cams out and in the first few days have already found signs of what an awesome Fall this is going to be. They'll be posting more pics to the site in the days and weeks to come. Enjoy.....

Turkey Season starts with a Bang!

The Spring 2010 Turkey Season starts at Rawhide Camp with the always fun Youth Weekend. We had a lot of first time hunters this year and a lot of nervous kids hearing gobbles and seing their first strutters. 10 year-old Luke Blevins started the year off right with his first turkey. It's gonna be a great year, can't wait to see you guys.

Deer Season Ends and Shed Season Begins!

As the deer season ends, it is time for a recap of the great fall. This season gave us many exciting hunts, filled with numerous encounters with once in a lifetime deer. We had 13 tremendous kills this year with the average score of the deer harvested being 161 inches. Our hunters had almost 90% opportunity of harvesting deer over 140 inches, unfortunately we had 8 animals wounded that we could not recover and 3 more hunters missed (sorry guys). We also had several awesome young deer that our hunters passed to be future giants. Scary (good scary) what next year is going to be like.

In early January, we started to notice a few of the bucks were shedding their horns. The weather was so brutal through January and February that we weren't able to start shed hunting as early as we would have liked. However, the first shed we found this year was huge, an 82 3/8 inch right side to a typical 10-Point deer we know very well. We found the other side a couple of weeks later, it measured almost the same at 81 3/8. Soon after finding that set, we found another matching set of sheds that belong to a giant 8 Point that has been on the property for 7 or 8 years now. A truly great start to this shed season.
